Independent Living Centre

Thanks in part to significant funding from Colchester Catalyst Charity, an Independent Living Centre was established in Colchester in 2007.

Located in Catalyst House, the Independent Living Centre (ILC) brings together a wide range of facilities for people with disabilities under one roof and is a base for healthcare staff, including specialist nurses, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists and other professionals involved in intermediate care.

The aim of the ILC is to promote independent living for adults and children with physical and/or sensory impairments. The Centre also provides information and training for carers and other interested individuals.

One of the key features at the ILC is a purpose-built suite of rooms, which displays products for:

  • Bathing
  • Showering
  • Toileting
  • Eating & Drinking
  • Seating
  • Hoisting
  • Beds
  • Kitchen Equipment
  • Telephones & Alarms
  • Stairlifts

The Centre also contains a state of the art demonstration facility for telecare and environmental control systems, which can monitor for fire and other emergencies and call for help on behalf of the user.

An Occupational Therapist is available by appointment for advice and assessment on all equipment. For an appointment, please ring 01206 518888. Textphone: 01206 518808.

Short-Term Wheelchair Loan Service

This service is available to anyone in North East Essex requiring the short-term loan of a wheelchair. All the wheelchairs are manual; no electrically powered chairs are available. There is a range of chairs suitable for most adults and young children.

The service is provided by the Short-Term Wheelchair Loan Charity and is free of charge. A £40 deposit is required, which will be refunded in full providing the equipment is returned in excellent working order.

The scheme exists to provide wheelchairs at short notice for those who have a temporary need. If you require long-term or permanent use of a wheelchair you should approach the Health Authority through your GP.

For more details, please ring 01206 518524 Monday to Friday 10am-12noon.
